CHEN ZHONGSAN, DATED 1918

A glass snuff bottle supported on a splayed oval footrim, with a spreading neck and flat lip, painted in ink and watercolors on one side with a hovering butterfly, a preying mantis and a grasshopper nibbling on large-leafed plants. the upper left dated wuwu (1918), signed Chen Zhongsan preceding a red seal, the reverse depicting an array of mountains surrounded by water, fronted with a monkey seated on a pine tree above a stag standing near auspicious lingzhi branches springing from a grassy ground.
