CITRINE, YELLOW, WITH RAISED PANELS

Citrine, the flawless stone of flattened rectangular form, with a cylindircal neck and a neatly carved oval footrim, all four sides carved with raised rectangular panels following the form of the bottle, the interior thickly walled to highlight the yellow stone.

It is rare to find citrine bottles with such a pronounced color as this example. The few that are known are generally carved using the flaws in the material in the style of the Rustic Crystal Master. This bottle cleverly uses raised panels on all sides and a thick interior wall to highlight the rich-golden color in the flawless stone. Zhangzhou and Zhangbu, both citites in Fujian Province were known as centers of carving for crystal, according to a comment in a Jesuit report from 1735.
