The material group of quartz, not only covers rock crystal but, also materials such as citrine and amethyst amongst other varieties, although it is rock crystal that is known as 'pure quartz'. Quartz is the earth's second most abundant mineral occurring in the continental crust, after feldspar which is used in glass-making. In color it can range from colorless through various shades to black and can be transparent to almost opaque. This example is part of a small group, probably from a single workshop from Fujian Province where the most prolific centers were for carving of this material.
