This lovely flawless crystal bottle left unadorned by the maker, is aesthetically in its simplest form allowing the owner to appreciate the stone. Like plain white jade, left uncarved, it can be appreciated both by sight and touch. The form of this bottle is akin to 18th century white jade bottles which were so admired for their tactile qualities and the quality of the material, itself. It was bottles like this example which were so appealing to the inside-painted artists, such as Ma Shaoxuan. In fact bottle no. 903, which is also the frontispiece for this website, an inside-painted crystal bottle with a pair of cranes in a landscape and an inscription by Ma Shaoxuan, is almost the pair to this bottle.
