Whilst we tend to think of this type of bottle as being made from lacquer, we must not forget that they were made on a base such as wood (in this case), textile or metal. The concept of weight as an indicator of quality, which exists for relief-carved lacquer such as cinnabar lacquer, has no bearing here. The apparent fragility of this snuff bottle belies its toughness, marked by its ability to survive the years in such good condition.
