WITH RUSSET SKIN, WITH THUMBREST

Nephrite, yellow, of very even tone with a side of natural skin, which would have naturally surrounded the sample. The body exceptionally well hollowed and all standing on a oval raised footrim, the front skin of darker, slightly ochre colour reciprocating perfectly for the thumb.

Despite the rather ordinary look of this bottle, no similar examples were found in yellow nephrite. The combination of the favored yellow color together with the darker skin would have proved irresistible to the scholar collector. This was certainly a bottle meant to be used; when held in the hand there is a perfect thumb-shaped depression allowing the owner to enjoy the smooth tactile quality of the stone.
