CHEN ZHONGSAN, EAGLE AND BEAR, CRANE, 1917

A glass snuff bottle, of flattened rectangular form, with a cylindrical neck, and with a neatly carved oval footrim, painted on the inside using ink and watercolors with a continuous scene, on one main side an eagle perched in the branches of a gnarled pine tree looking down at a bear with one paw raised, with mountains in the distance, the reverse with a red-crested crane with outstretched wings standing on rockwork under a pine tree, one leg raised, the sun in the distance above mountainous peaks, signed Chen Zhongsan with one red seal and dated.
