There are two main qualities to look for when considering the sucess of underglaze blue and white porcelain, whether they are snuff bottles or other wares. The strength and vibrancy of the pigment is very important as an overfiring of the porcelain would cause the brilliant cobalt color to become darker and more purple in tone. The second important quality lies in the skill of the painter and in both the freedom of his work and his control over his medium. In these respects this bottle suceeds admirably depicting a classic historical scene with both artistry and finesse.
