YELLOW, MALLET FORM

Porcelain with a transparent yellow glaze, of flattened paper-mallet shape, with a long cylindrical neck and wide mouth, with a recessed oval foot; molded on each main side with a formalized lattice made up of shou characters within a circular panel, the shoulders with small, dog-like mock mask and ring handles, the footrim left unglazed.

Although in isolation this would appear to be an early porcelain bottle, the shape is otherwise only known in the snuff bottle world in a small group of nineteenth century porcelain bottles, some decorated with iron-red, and some with reticulated panels. None of these, however, have monochrome glazes and they may be a later version of the same form.
